The other night I was just sitting around the condo and looking at some cool art work using type and it made me remember I never finished making my typography. I created my own type for a previous project based on making Urban Outfitters more green by using recycled paper and getting rid of their plastic bags and gift cards. So I finished it up last night and also gave it a few more tweaks, now to create it as a ttf for everyday use. I am actually hoping to use the solid color version of this font for a future vector art piece as well.

So here is the revised version of the type. (colors are not web friendly)

Keep forgetting to post that I finally caved in after two years of devoted Marta use and got myself a car. 1994 BMW 325is, should be a fun car to build and drive.

So I guess this is my official first build pictures.

Already got a few parts on it, but it still needs a few things before I can take it to a track day.
Thank goodness for winter downtime.

The Fork In The Road

So lately I have been feeling sort of lost, split into multiple directions. I feel like I have some many things I want to pursue in life that I keep limiting myself by just picking one road to travel. I have always been a person that wants to know how to do everything that might interest me and that probably doesn't help things. I just wish that there was a way to do everything that spins around in my head as I think of it with no regret. Maybe one day I will find a way to make time for everything that I would like to accomplish. Guess I will just have to stay on my path traveled for now and maybe it will lead me in the right direction. I'm hoping by writing this down I will spark some type of inspiration one way or another.

And on that note I will leave cheerful with a great song from Vampire Weekend off their new album Contra.

One of the newest internet finds to join my bookmarks thanks to Mr. Roegge and his always interesting status updates.
After browsing the site I think this is totally one of the coolest projects I have seen of late when it come to my friends and their creative abilities. Biking The Hoosier State

I'm back home again in Indiana, hahaha see what I did there? Anyways, while spending some time here I decided to bring my bike and do some riding in a different atmosphere from the big city buildings. Here are some pictures from my phone on my trip around the neighborhood testing out my new DP18 track wheel with Origin8 fixed hub and euro-asia cog set-up. (also pictured is my new Kazane crank set)
One thing I realized about my ride today is that I never noticed how steep the hills are in southern Indiana.

The Feed Shop

I never write up about places I eat at but this place was just to good to not talk about.
This previous weekend I celebrated my 28th birthday and like every year I decided to go have a nice meal at a new place. I heard some good things about a restaurant in College Park called The Feed Shop, so I decided to go try it out.Seriously the best meal I have had in a long time. They didn't have a huge menu but they did have something for everyone.
I choose to get the calamari to start with a surprise guest appearance of baby octopi and it was amazing, really sweet and not too tough. (enough food for a table of 5)For my main course I choose to have the chicken and duck covered in local bbq sauce with white cheese macaroni and coca-cola can baked beans. The chicken was nicely breaded and moist. The duck was sweet and fell right off the bone, the bbq sauce was a very nice touch on top. The mac-n-cheese was amazing and the baked beans had a nice spice to them but not to off from the rest of the meal.
(sorry no photo of this cause I was to busy enjoying my meal)
And all of this great meal was washed down with a nice red wine.

The one thing I did think was weird about the place was that it seemed completely empty, besides my table there were maybe 3 others in the whole place on a Saturday night. I would hope that the next time I go it will be packed cause the food there deserves it.
On a side note they also have a bar, it had nobody in it, but it looked rad. Plus they have PBR on tap.

Drift Mechaniks Water Park Demo

This past weekend the local Atlanta drift crew, Drift Mechaniks, hosted a demo during the Motorsport Nationals at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was a crazy weekend with tons of unwanted rain, but that did not stop the Drift Mechaniks from putting on a show for the crowd of people that stuck it out in the not so great conditions. The event turnout was kind of small due to the weather and late preparations, but hopefully after the great show and energy by the group of people who attended this next year will bring out a bigger crowd of enthusiasts.

So during the weekend I decided to do my part to support my Drift Mechaniks family and went to play in the AMS water park as well.

So I was browsing the nets one day looking for new mixtapes to add to my collection and came across this amazing new piece of technology. It is called the "Reactable" and what it does is amazing. Here is a quick break down on the technology and function of the product.
The Reactable hardware and software delivers a robust object and finger tracking platform for the creation of tangible multi-touch interactive surfaces. The platform is based on computer vision using high quality industrial cameras which can track numerous tagged objects and finger touches on the interactive table surface. This surface is made of a specially engineered acrylic material, where the visual feedback is displayed using a short-throw projector inside the table. The full system is completely self-contained and only needs a single external 110/220V power-supply.

So pretty much this is the coolest thing ever and I can't wait to see what people will do with this thing, maybe someday I will see a live mash-up performed on one Reactable.

So the word is spreading faster then a California wild fire about our little event last November and so far this is the best review of the "Drift Mechanik's Don't Stop" video yet.

I know, I know its on the main page of wrecked… I know……Jesus.

But this shit is so good i think it should be shown to all guys who film action sports of any kind. When i am kinda down on drifting as a whole (it happens its winter time) I see video’s like this and it fully restores my faith that we are making progress with this dumb sport. If pro drifting got you down,bored,angry.. It reminds us to take a breath and check out what the Grassroots has to offer.

This is grassroots drifting at its best. If Clubloose Won 2008…. Then this video already won 2009….. Thats it.. no more applications! I love almost every second of it. The music sucks but besides that it is wonderful.

Highlights include but are not limited to:

Fat Photographer getting blasted with minitornado of dirt

Awesome tandem and multicar shots

A real sense of speed

The “chase” cam angle

The rapid cuts so ADD suffers dont get bored..

The Scandals Are True!

IT'S OFFICIAL, the Drift Mechaniks GGMASD "the best event nobody ever heard about" has finally leaked onto the internet and already accumulating over 900 views within 24 hours of its release. After all of the little video teasers and sneak peek photos dropped randomly to keep you interested and wanting more. The true spirit of the event has finally made its way out of the clouds of gossiping ears and directing into the eyes of the unprepared. Since November 1 2008 the only people that truly know anything about the event were the 26 selected individuals, including one amazing videographer in attendance at the private infield road course all day event.
It has been a long time in the making and I can truly say that Will Roegge made the DM family VERY proud after watching it. My hat is off to you sir, you truly are an artist at what you do.

A Secret That Should Be Told

Secret Wars takes the concept of battling and puts it in the spotlight surrounded by tons of viewing eyes as it features two competitors squaring off in a 90 minute art freestyle session. Each contestant is given a huge 20 foot mural with no prior knowledge of themes and must then put something together in an interactive environment where you are encouraged to feed off the other competitor and crowd members to create complete domination. No sketch-books are allowed effectively ensuring that this is truly on the spot ingenuity. Winners are determined via a three point system; two judges, as well as a crowd-component measured via a decibel reader are used to determine a winner. After visiting the site gallery and watching the videos I can hands down say that in some way, shape, or form I will be at this event when it makes its way to New York City. Visit the site and view the galleries, I'm pretty sure you will want to join me at Secret Wars.

On another note but same concept, if you more on the Photoshop skills side of things you should totally check out Cut&Paste.

I LOVE TYPE

So if you truly know me you would know that I am a HUGE typography nerd. I don't know if it leads back to my days of graffiti or the hardcore designer inside me, but I could totally just hand draw and make typography for the rest of my life. So when I get the chance I love to create my own personal type, I have done this in two of my portfolio projects thus far.
Well enough about my nerdy interior, lets get down to the reason that lead to this post.
I found this book at a bookstore and fell in LOVE with it. So one day I went into the library at school to see if they had it and they did. I was so excited I read the whole thing in one sitting and then got inspired to make some of my own fonts. It had great imagery of hand drawn type and tons of links to artist websites on top of all the artist write-ups. If you are a typography fan like myself you should totally go get this book.

New Blog Name, Same Blog Feel

It seems there has been a few complaints about the name of this blog and the problem of remembering the blog url cause of its crazy long title, or something. So I decided that it would be a smart decision on my part to change it to something a bit easier. This new name also tends to give me a variety of different names I can play with to link it to my portfolio website.

I might be awhile before I can get around to changing the overall look but that is just a minor detail.

On other news; this years Super-Bowl advertising spots totally sucked, a bunch seemed unoriginal, to many ads already viewed, and there were way too many movie trailers. The quality and number of different advertisements seem to be dwindling more and more every year. Being an aspiring ad man this is very disappointing and sort of pisses me off since I only watch the game for the ads.
Well anyways, If I had to pick a top 3 they would be: (in order and with my own titles)

1) Audi: Chase Scenes
This ad had amazing cinematography and when you think about it, it seems all the cool new action movie chase scenes involve an Audi.

2) Pepsi: Refresh Through Time (time lapse comparing like things)
Another great cinematic advertisement and I liked the comparisons, but I disliked the Black Eyed Pea spot and song.

3) Coca-Cola: The Heist (bugs steal the Coke)
Just hands down great design work and it seemed like it had a bunch of thought behind it. Would have taken #1 on my list, but the other two just made a better consumer connection through personal feels and memories.

I am a huge fan of the new direction advertising is trying to take these days and finally looking forward to graduating. Lately I have been very uninterested in joining the work force of robots not willing to thing for themselves and forget the past. A few more companies are realizing that you don't have to be so traditional with their method and exploring more out of the box thinking, of course they are not American. I hate that most people in the industry just won't open up to it, but when I see a great ad that takes a different road it just puts a smile on my face. Advertising can be an art form and very attention getting without making you feel like it was just forced on you. This Audi ad I just saw made me love advertising again and pumped me up to stick with my personal style.

So its that time of the year again to make a promise to yourself that you try your hardest to accomplish but just seem to fall short. Like those wash board abs you always talk about having or to run a mile everyday. Well I tend to push myself on this task by asking what would be the hardest thing for me to accomplish and do it for one year, then try to keep it if needed. For example one year was to intake zero caffeine, this one stuck with me and I have been caffeine free for 10 years now. Two years ago I decided to stop smoking cigarettes and have still not smoked. So this year I decided to give myself the hardest task of all.......no alcohol for an entire year. Being that I come from a German family that drinks wine/beer at every meal and I am a social drinker when I hang out with friends. This task will be a hard habit to break, but lets see how it goes and I will keep you posted if I last.
So I had to end my year by emptying out my condo of all alcohol in one night.
It started with the beers.

and by the end of the night the alcohol was gone.

So the challenge has been accepted.

I got a break from work and school for a bit so decided to take a last minute flight back to my hometown to visit the family. It was a very interesting time and here is a small photo document of my trip.

Leaving Atlanta I got through security in 5 minutes and had my flight changed three times so I took a walk around and saw this art display. Leap frog anyone?

Decided to go out to my familiar spot and scare the locals with my personal style. No John Deer hats or deer camo in my closet.

So I got to Sportsmans just in time drink some micro German brew and watch the rest of da Bears game.

Went to the Christmas Eve service and actually didn't burst into flames. Before all that excitement we had a wii family bowling night. Never say an 80 year old can't beat you in Wii sports cause you will get embarrassed.

Myself and two other friends from school decided to make a few commercials for the Doritos Crash The Superbowl contest. It was a ton of fun making them and took a lot more work than I thought to produce and edit. None of us are familiar with video programs, but I think they came out pretty well. Here is one of our entries a field day potato sack race that turned out to be a bit more competitive when a bag of Doritos was put up for grabs.

Atlanta Addy Awards

My entries are in, I haven't slept proper in days, I'm completely stressed out, but it will all be worth it on February 7th.

This year is my first year competing in the Addy's. I am super excited that I got to enter three campaigns for judging and feel pretty confident about two of them.

Pictured are two of my campaigns.

First is my Urban Outfitters campaign. Since they seem to be all on the "be green" boat with their shirts I felt like they need to get rid of the plastic bags and gift cards to stay true to the game. I choose to make a bag, gift card, and gift box out of dark recycled paper and I created a font for the company name. I wanted it to stay playful but true to the brand so I picked bright colors for the main type and accents, but gave still that urban grunge. This is a four piece campaign only part not in the picture is the guerrilla piece which is moss graffiti on the side of urban area style brick walls done in the same typography.

This last image was a three piece campaign for the Red Bull Flugtag event in Chicago. I did a direct mailer that folds open with sign-up information and event history, then folds open again to a poster. The next part was a bus advertisement to be placed on the back of CTA buses and on the side of double decker tour buses. The last part is a guerrilla piece to be placed in fountains around downtown Chicago. The planes would be made of foam so they could float and designed to replicate the Red Bull plane. On the bottom of the wings would be brief information on the event and a link to the website to sign-up and get more information.

Well hopefully everyone enjoys my ideas and wish me luck.

Andy Sapp Killed It Again

Andy Sapp just finished up his most metal drift video ever for his 2008 driver profile and I must say that it is crazier than crazytown, with an amazing amount of editing and lack of care in his driving footage to blast his shenanigans into a A+ video. Once you watch the video you will see just how radtown it is and more than likely play it again like a bad crack habbit.

Formula D Rd.3 New Jersey

Formula Drift's Rd.3 New Jersey (June 14th 2008) didn't take place in it's normal location at Wall Raceway, instead this year it took place in Englishtown at Old Bridge. I was lucky enough to be able to attend this high speed day of drifting with entry speeds well into the 90s and above. While I was enjoying the very hot day at the track and trying my best to not get too sun burnt, I did some photo coverage of the event for my friends at S3 Magazine.

Southeastdrift's Triple Threat: Round 1

Hot-lanta drifting was in full effect on Saturday May 31st, with SoutheastDrift's "Triple Threat" @ Turner Field.
The day was very hot and long, but the turn out for the first practice day seemed to be really good.
Thanks to Marcos for setting up the practice day and hope to see everyone out for Round 2 on June 28th.

Drift Alliance ... Stay Hungry DVD Premier

The Drift Alliance just wrapped up making their second movie to be released at midnight tonight. They just happened to have their DVD premier in Atlanta while they are in town for Formula D, so of course I decided to take part in the madness. The evening started off with a few drinks with the DA crew while the line started forming. After walking the red carpet thingy and doing the DM group photos with full out knife trickery, we grabbed some more beer and sat down to enjoy the film. For those of you that missed the premier tonight the special intro to the film was shotgun-rific and hilarious. The driver intros were AWESOME! and Hampshaa's part was mad sick with the chase scene editing. The video in a nut shell was gross amounts of smoke, tons of laughter, and a sweet fireworks display from Tony. It was good meeting tons of people I never really see face to face, but talk to on a almost daily basis. To wrap this up I think everyone should add this to their DVD list and to the members of DA that I didn't get to talk to after the event....congrats and well done!

Because I Floss So Hard...

Since I have caved into the peer pressure of the blogger world I feel my first post needs to be flossin'. THE COOL KIDS...
The duo of Mickey Rocks and Chuck Inglish are straight out the Go (Chicago) and one of the sickest groups I have heard in a REALLY long time. Their rockabilty and rhyme style is some of the freshest shit since the 80's, yes I said it, 80's. The Cool Kids are taking it back to when hip hop was fun and all about getting ill with your music up as loud as it will go. I suggest that everyone go out on May 20th and buy their album, The Bake Sale, if you don't you're a lame! Also check them out live if they hit your city, they are on tour right now.

Another one of the coolest up and coming rappers from Chicago. Hollywood Holt's energy filled rhymes just won't leave my head. Ever since I got my hands on his mixtape I can't seem to not play it at least once a day. If you every thought mopeds and yellow pants were lame, you were wrong, and Holt seems to prove this point, treated. Right now I'm really blast'n his new song "Get It How U Live It", it is not like most of the other songs and the beat is kill. I totally support this dude and hope he drops by the "A" in the near future. Keep bustin out those dope hits Holt! and I'll keep bang'n em.

MILLION $ MANO...
Is the self proclaimed connoisseur of connoisseur's from the Windy City that doesn't just have a style game you can't match, he also makes beats and mixtapes that you aim to duplicate. Mano isn't just motivated by his name to reach a net worth of million dollars, but in my eyes he is well on his way to accomplishing that goal. Mostly known for spinning some of the hottest parties and sickest shows in Chicago. Mano also produces and dropes mad beats for Hollywood Holt, Mic Terror, and others, so now you see why I just had to introduce you to Million Dolla. Mano on a few tracks does some rapping too, so watch out for that. Right now Mano is on tour with M.I.A., which is a sick artist, and will be playing a few of Kanye's "Glow In The Dark" shows. He has a mixtape out on his MySpace page that you can download and rock while in your car or on the train. I play it at least every other day, that Peter, Bjorn, and John vs. Kayne West is the hotness. If your looking for a sick new remix for your myspace page I would totally click over to Mano's page and grab one asap.

To Finish off my first post I will just add that the new Lupe Fiasco album "The Cool" is the sickness. It is a total play till the end album, you never need to change the songs, unless its to replay the last one you just heard.
